April 20, 1953 ~ January 16, 2020
Cherie was born on April 20, 1953, in Fairplay, Colo., to Wilbur and Bettie Pierce of Jefferson, Colo.
She grew up in Jefferson, Colo., attending and graduating from South Park High School. While attending school, she met and dated her high school sweetheart, Herbert Van Schooten, whom she married on May 23, 1971. They were married for 48 years.
Cherie and Herb moved from South Park in 1980 to Maher, Colo., where they raised their daughter, Tammy, and enjoyed ranching and living in the country.
Cherie loved working in the small hometown community as a convenience store clerk for Haggies General Store until its closing, and then for close friends at the Crawford Country Store until its closing. She also worked for a short time in the Maher Post Office.
Her hobbies were spoiling her granddaughters, spending as much time as she could with her family and loving the Lord.
She is survived by her husband, Herbert Van Schooten of Paonia, Colo; her daughter, Tammy (Alan) Weston of Grand Junction, Colo.; and granddaughters, Teena and Rylee Weston, also of Grand Junction; her mother, Bettie Pierce of Grand Prairie, Texas; a brother Mike (Betty) Pierce of Belen, N.M.; sister, Laurie (John) Scaggs of Grand Prairie, Texas; niece, Brandi (Jeff) Moses, and nephew Michael Scaggs, along with many other family members and close friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Wilbur Pierce.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, Jan. 24, 2020 at 2 p.m., at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss, Colo.
The family has asked to just be showered in cards and written letters of memories of Cherie in lieu of flowers. Cards can be sent to the Van Schooten home at 38264 Bone Mesa Road, Paonia, CO 81428.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
