Platte Canyon High School speech team competed in the state speech meet at Heritage High School.
There were 20 teams that competed. They were Alamosa, Aspen, Battle Mountain, Dawson School, Eagle Valley, Faith Christian, Fort Morgan, Fowler, Fredrick, Genoa, Hugo Gunnison, Hayden, Limon, Platte Canyon, Prospect Ridge Academy, Rye, Stargate and Steamboat Springs.
In creative storytelling, Heidi Sussenbach was third and Danielle Whitmer was 26th. In duet acting humor, Emma Heineman and Sierra Nieland were third. Emily Huntley was fourth in contrasting monologues.
Joe Huntley was 11th and Josh Seidler was 18th in poetry interpretation, Brenna Curry was third and Sarah Yates 14th.
Heineman, Nieland, Joe Huntley, Josh Seidler and Yates competed in their last meet, as they are seniors.
“Congratulations to the speech team who marvellously represented Platte Canyon State Festival speech meet,” Coach Amanda Waterhouse said.
With 20 schools and 250 participants, eight of 11 Platte Canyon students who competed won awards. Drew Heineman took second in humor interpretation, Heidi Sussenbach, Brenna Curry, Emma Heineman and Sierra Nieland took third in their events. Emily Huntley took fourth. Jackson Seidler won ninth. Nieland took 11th in her other event and Joe Huntley took 12th.
“In addition, the Colorado High School Activities Association awarded Elliot Hutchinson of Battle Mountain High School the inaugural Maggie Long Spirit of speech award. This is a new award that honors the student who best reaches out and befriends students outside of his/her team, who strengthens the Festival Speech community, helps others and spreads joy and positivity as Maggie did,” Waterhouse added.
