Eagle Rock and the Winter Solstice hike

It’s that time of year again: the end of it. Time to look back over another year’s worth of hikes and outdoor adventures. How better to reminisce than with other hiking enthusiasts, and where better to do it than on the trail? One might argue that a nice, civilized wine and cheese party would be a better setting, so we’ve combined the two, enjoying a wine and cheese on the trail. And what better time than on the Winter Solstice (or as close to it as we could get), on the shortest day of the year.

Park County Fishing Report
Updated: January 05, 2013 - 11:09 am

Antero Reservoir – With autumn officially upon us, most would expect a change in the fishing, but this is not the case at Antero. Trout fishing is still good on the reservoir above the weed lines and along the south end. The weather temperatures are turning colder, so fishing activity is at its strongest in the morning hours. If the sun breaks through the more frequent cloud cover, a mid-day pause in fish biting can be seen.

Park County Fishing Report
Updated: January 05, 2013 - 11:09 am

Antero Reservoir – Fishing for boaters has been rewarding on Antero as the fish are feeding clear into the evening. A mixed bag of rainbows, cutbows and browns are being caught in the 22-inch range on an assortment of lures. It is suggested to fish above the weed line, but the bug activity has slowed due to recent overcast skies. The fish are hitting fast and furious due to the lack of bug activity and are hungry.

A modest hike is a good choice for a spring hike, especially if you expect to be leaving established trails. I decided to head for the summit of Royal Mountain. This tree-covered mountain is located between the headwaters of Deer and Elk creeks. It’s named for one of the Royals for whom the Royal Ranch was also named.
