Platte Canyon Cross Country team hosted the Husky Invitational Aug. 28 at the Rosalie property near Bailey.
Nine teams competed in the meet. They were Arrupe Jesuit, Clear Creek, DSST Montview, Denver Academy, Denver Christian, Denver Eagles, KIPP Denver Collegate, Middle Park and Platte Canyon. There was a limit of ten teams and five runners per team for both boys and girls.
“Considering the current environment, I am very happy that we still have the Husky Invite,” first-year Coach Mike Demko said. “We are spreading the meet over three days to meet the COVID guidelines, yet we still allow everyone the opportunity to run.”
There are 12 boys and 5 girls on the team. They are for the girls seniors Emma Dikken, Sydney Wagner and Amy Bezzant; the only junior is Hannah Grover. The Huskies have one freshman, Ily Hardey. For the boys, the seniors are Dante Branigan and Joseph Melero; juniors Tucker Sussenbach, Jace Valentine and Gavin Geiger; sophomores Liam Bailey, Isaac Rails and Seth Black.
The Huskies edged DSST 40 to 41.
Jace Valentine led the Huskies, placing fifth with a time of 22:59.8. Tucker Sussenbach was right behind him with a time of 23:18.9. Joe Melero was tenth with a time of 23:53.5. TJ Mattson was 19 with a time of 24:57. Tate Heineman was 22nd with a time of David 25:43.6. Seaver was 23 with a time of 25:46.4.
The JV boys finished second behind Lake County.

Hannah Grover was 11th with a time of 27:44.3. Emma Dikken was 13th with a time of 28:53.6. Amy Bezzant was 18th with a time of 32:34.3 and Sydney Wagner was 25th with a time of 35:43.9.
Platte Canyon does not have a girls junior varsity team.
“The meet went very well with the boys winning the team title and the girls third,” Coach Mike Demko said. “Almost all the returning runners improved their times in the course despite the hot weather. On the boys side I would like to highlight the performance of Jace Valentine and Tucker Sussenbach finishing fifth and sixth overall. Their performance reflects the hard work they put in this summer. I was also happy to see such a small spread between first and seventh. On the girls side, I would like to highlight Hannah Grover and Amy Bezzant. Amy joined the team a week ago and was a big surprise. Hannah greatly improved her time from last year. On the JV side we only had boys and I was generally pleased with each one of them. They took second place as a team.”
