The Platte Canyon High School Lady Huskies basketball team turned in a defensive gem and captured a coveted Class 2A playoff victory Friday against the Nederland Lady Panthers, 27-21.
Junior post player Amy Bezzant led the Huskies with eight points, freshman shooting guard Chyann Kelly pitched in seven and freshman Hannah Grover added six.
“The girls were really excited and now we are looking forward to Burlington in the next round,” said first-year coach Becca Brenner. “It’s all about how you finish the season, and we are taking it one game at a time.”
A determined defensive effort, relentless rebounding and good ball movement in their transition offense were the primary ingredients victory. After allowing just eight first half points to the home team, the Huskies kept the pressure on and never really looked back en route to their first road victory of the season. In the third quarter, the Huskies turned up the heat even more on the defensive end to limit the Panthers to just three points.
“Amy was posting up near the basket and we were finding her the whole game,” Brenner said. “Amy was also effective rebounding, and then we were getting into transition and creating scoring opportunities. So the girls are finally putting all facets of the game together, which is nice to see.”
The Huskies traveled to take on Burlington Tuesday, but results from that contest were not available at press time.
