The DSST Stapleton Lady Knights proved too much for the Platte Canyon High School Lady Huskies Saturday, as the Huskies fought hard in the early portions of the contest but were eventually outmanned, 60-25.
The Knights moved to 9-9 overall and 5-5 in Frontier League competition, while the Huskies fell to 1-16, 1-7.
Despite missing several starters, the Huskies kept things close early in the contest with a tenacious defensive effort.
“We played great in the first quarter despite being shorthanded,” said Platte Canyon head coach Becca Brenner.
Leading the way offensively were Chyann Kelly and Amy Bezzant, who scored 16 and seven points, respectively.
“Chyann has done a tremendous job for us this season,” Brenner said. “Especially being a freshman, and never getting a break and having to be on the floor for a lot of minutes. That’s not easy, but Chyann has held up well. She will only get better with more experience.”
Kelly leads the Huskies in scoring for the season with 8.5 points per game.
Bezzant, a 5-10 junior, has been extremely effective on the boards all season. Against the Knights, Bezzant hauled in eight rebounds. Bezzant leads the team in rebounds, averaging just under seven per contest.
The Huskies wrapped up the regular season schedule Saturday against Lake County High School, and will begin post season play Saturday against an opponent yet to be determined.
