Brad Ernest Johns

Brad Ernest Johns was born Oct. 14, 1938, in Elgin, Ill., to Rueben F. and H. Louise (Peterson) Johns and was their only child.

Brad grew up in Aurora, Ill., and attended West Senior High School where he began running track, leading to a long enjoyment of jogging.

After graduating from high school in 1956, Brad first attended Northern Illinois State College before transferring to Colorado State University, where he met and dated the love of his life, Joann. Brad graduated in 1960 with a bachelor’s degree in Biological Science.

On Dec. 29, 1962 Brad married Joann K. Reeves in Lansing, Ill., beginning their 56-year adventure together.

Brad served as a Specialist E-4 in the U.S. Army at Walter Reed Medical Center from 1962 to 1964, and during his service received the Good Conduct Medal and the Expert badge for the M-1 rifle.

Brad and Joann moved to Colorado in 1964, where Brad was employed with the U.S. Department of Agriculture at the Denver Federal Center as a physiologist doing vertebrate pest control research for over 35 years.

In 1971 Brad and Joann found their small dream home in the beautiful mountains near Bailey. For 34 years, Brad made the hour commute to work each day, indulging in one of his favorite activities: driving. Brad was always tinkering with his vehicles and just about anything he could get his hands on. He greatly enjoyed reading, photography, learning new things, hunting with family and friends, watching his kids and grandchildren playing sports, and snacking, especially on popcorn.

Brad, who trusted in and claimed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, could be found in the morning studying God’s word, and he lived according to 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 by leading a quiet life, working hard with his hands and living in such a way to gain the respect of others. Brad attended and served on the board of Pine Community Church for decades. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend and is greatly missed.

Brad moved on to his eternal home with Jesus on the afternoon of July 13, 2018.

Brad is survived by his wife, Joann; his four children: Ann (Ron) Bouchard of Lambert, Mont.; Peter (Jami) Johns of Bailey, Colo.; Daniel (Christi) Johns of Oroville, Calif.; and Matt (Andrea) Johns of Divide, Colo.; and his six grandchildren: Caleb, Zachary, April, Alyssa, Avery and Kenzie. Brad was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Pine Community Church, 16795 County Road 126, Pine, Colo. A family graveside service followed the funeral service at Horn Cemetery, Bailey, Colo.
