Guffey residents divided on cemetery ‘cleanup’

ATVs driven over graves, visible tracks remain, trees cut, historic fencing removed

Guffey residents are divided on the results of recent cleanup work at the Guffey cemetery, with some residents of the Guffey community having contacted The Flume in shock, disappointment and anger after the cleanup work left trees cut down and other trees limbed up. An ATV track now mars an area leading from town and across private property up to the cemetery, and fencing has been removed from burial sites. Some residents are also upset that ground-penetrating-radar machinery was driven over graves.

Bill Soux, a 40-year-resident of Guffey, said the cemetery was his “hide-out,” and now it’s destroyed.
