Drivers sometime blink or sneeze and they miss the entire town of Hartsel while traveling U.S. Highway 24, often in a hurry and kicking up dust.

However, the smell of barbecue wafting over the highway, literary characters calling out from the Hartsel Community Library books and much more will slow and stop traffic in Hartsel Memorial Day weekend.

The Country Church of Hartsel had its first Memorial Day barbecue for the whole community including visitors last year, and promises another fantastic event complete with barbecued meat, potato salad and more.

With the success of last year’s Memorial Day festivities, the church is coordinating with a variety of Hartsel organizations and businesses to make the Second Annual Hartsel Memorial Day Barbecue bigger and better. Barbecued meat will consist of hamburgers and brats; no charge, but donations are gladly accepted for the church building fund.

The barbecue will be held May 25, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be no garage sale this year.

The Hartsel Community Library has jumped aboard and will be hosting a Book and Bake Sale. Anniversary bags along with delicious bake sale goods, including pies and cookies, will be for sale. The sale will be open both Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The HOPP, Hartsel’s new pizza restaurant, will be having its Grand Opening party Saturday and Sunday, featuring cornhole (also known as bean bag toss) games, pizza specials, craft beer and surprises throughout the weekend.

The Como Civic Association kicks off their monthly Dinner and Bingo event with a special edition to be held Saturday May 25.

Dinner begins at 6 p.m. with roasted pork loin, mashed potatoes, gravy and green beans provided by the CCA.

Bingo starts at 7 p.m. with ten games for ten dollars.

The Como Bingo season is from June through November, the third Saturday of each month. Volunteers are needed and welcome.

Farmer’s Markets

Alma’s farmer’s market kicks off May 25, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Ladies Hall parking lot.

The Coney Island farmer’s market in Bailey opens Sunday May 26, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
