Former theatre manager Bill Bruner and others with experience in the field are working to open the curtains soon at a yet-to-be-determined location in Bailey.
The Bailey Theatre Company has already established a board of directors and is currently in the process of gathering community input and raising funds to support a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit enterprise.
Most recently, the board held a public meet and greet at Mad Jack’s Brewery.
“We had a good event, raised some money and look forward to having another event in July,” Bruner said.
Bruner and other board members hope to raise the equivalent of a couple years of budget before officially launching the company. It is Bruner’s strong desire for the company, and the theatre venue, to be located exclusively in Bailey.
“We want to make right here in Bailey, have three or four shows the first year, and then bump that up to six shows annually from then on,” Bruner said. “We have a couple of possibilities for venues, but we would prefer not to disclose that information just yet.”
The group foundational members of the project include multi-award winning director Ina Marlowe. Marlowe was the artistic director and co-founder of the Library Theatre in Chicago from 2005-2007, co-founded and directed the first two seasons at Feltre Library, was producing artistic director of Organic Theater in Chicago from 1996 to 2005, and merged Organic Theater with Touchstone Theatre.
Marlowe boasts an impressive resume and has earned a litany of awards including Chicagoan of the Year in the Arts: Chicago Tribune, Top Ten Productions: Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times, Kansas City Star, and the Distinguished Alumni Award: Goodman School of Drama, DePaul University.
Board members for the Bailey Theatre Company include Sherry Jacobs, Heidi Baker (secretary), Bruner (managing director), Lauren Drabble (treasurer), Lizzie Bayard, Ellen Campa, Janine Jones and Marlowe (artistic director).
