"Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam"
After scanning the news for the last few weeks and seeing that there has been no legal action against the people responsible for the senseless killing of 32 bison belonging to Monte Downare's Ranch and two from Hartsel Springs Ranch, I am very disheartened. What is taking so long? The crime is so blatantly obvious to most people who have learned about it. The question has to be asked. Is our law enforcement in Park County intimidated by the power of the suspected perpetrator? The failure to prosecute this crime will set a shoddy precedent for others to execute animals that happen to cross over the other side of the fence. It was reported that the ranch owner who allegedly gave permission for this massacre was feuding with the owner of most of the bison and neighboring ranch. That is not a reason or a right to kill these helpless buffalo (many were going to calve within a month). The way the bison were killed and left to rot is evidence that these gang-style killers were not legitimate hunters. Monte Downare is a very responsible rancher who would go out with his family and ranch hands in severe, freezing weather to herd animals back if they happenned to roam off his land. There are civilized, and legal ways to solve these kinds of issues without abusing defenseless animals. If the unhappy owner of the adjacent ranch did not want to have a home where the buffalo roam, he should have stayed in Texas.
